Red Ribbon Week. I love dressing to a theme, and lucky for me, being a teacher comes with several opportunities for themed attire. This week was one of those opportunities. Red Ribbon Week is a week that encourages students to be drug-free. Throughout the week counselors have the children participate in various activities that promote a healthy and drug-free lifestyle, and the entire school is encouraged to participate in our themed dress days. This year’s themes were: (1) Team Up Against Drugs! [sports shirt], (2) Be a Hero: Say NO to Drugs! [red, white, & blue], (3) Sock it To Drugs! [silly socks], & (4) RED-y to be Drug-Free [wear red]. I realize that dressing in theme is not going to stop kids from experimenting with drugs, but it does bring awareness to the issue. For kids who have to adhere to a strict dress code, having the chance to veer from the norm and be silly for a few days is a breath of fresh air and believe it or not, they understand why they are getting to dress up. They understand that the only reason we are dressing differently is to encourage and promote a drug-free life. It also happens to be a lot of fun for the students… and of course, the staff!!

AFSP Community Walk. A few weekends ago, I made a trip up to Dallas to participate in a community walk for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. My family and I walked three miles in honor of my daddy. It was an incredible experience. One that I am truly grateful for. There is something about being surrounded by a group of people that have all experienced a loss like mine that is comforting. I was also extremely touched to have a group of friends join us for the walk. We even had two little walkers join in the fun! It is good to know that although it’s been 6 years, my father’s presence is still very much felt.
After the walk, we headed over to the Katy Trail Ice House for some food, drinks, and fellowship. We talked & laughed in the midst of all of the college football fans who were out in full force. My favorite part was getting to love on my little ladies H & T! After lunch, it was on to La Madeline for a little hot chocolate, followed by a quick trip to the Sprinkles ATM!!! I’m pretty sure I need one installed in my future home.Brilliant!
The weekend was one of the best I’ve had in a while. It was spent with those I love the most, while honoring my favorite man in the world.
Sad News. Gia Allemande, former ‘Bachelor’ & ‘Bachelor Pad’ contestant has died due to complications from an apparent suicide attempt. She was only 29 years old, and happened to be, in my opinion, one of the sweetest, kindest, and most sane cast members. Suicide is an issue that touches so many of us. It is a reality. Not just something that happens on TV or in movies. It is very real and very sad, both for the lives that are lost and those that are left behind. Although I don’t know Gia or her loved ones personally, I would ask y’all to please keep them all in your prayers. If you are interested in more information regarding suicide awareness and prevention, please go to www.afsp.org.
Why. Why did you leave us? Why did you go? We needed you here. We still need you now. Every day that passes without you feels incomplete. You should be here to share in our success, our happiness. You should be here to comfort in our failures, our sadness. You should be here to hug us when wonderful things happen. You should be here to hug us when it feels like our world is falling apart. Why did you leave us? Why did you go? You thought we’d be better off, but we’re forever broken now. We’ll keep going because that’s who you raised us to be, but we’d be better with you here. You were our hero, our number one guy. Why did you leave us? Why did you go?
Short Shorts. I’m not really sure at what age wearing short shorts becomes inappropriate. I do know that I dread the day I reach that age, because short shorts are a summer staple for me. Now all I need are some Daisy Duke legs to go with them!!
One Month. Moving day is one month from today. I’m not excited about the actual moving process, but I’m very excited for the end result. A fresh start is on the horizon, but first, there’s so much to do in the next few weeks. Gotta get to workin’!
Savoring Summer. Lazy mornings with the puppies. Nights out with friends. An uncurable addiction to Bacon, Tomato, & Avocado sandwiches. Visits to the dog park. Long phone chats with far away friends. Jammin’ to my Jack Johnson pandora station. Catching up with co-workers over mexican & margaritas. Making the most of summer before it’s over.
Sweet Dreams. I’ve been wanting a pillow(s) embroidered with ‘sweet dreams’ to go on my bed for quite some time now, and when I stumbled upon this lovely set on etsy, I had no choice but to click the ‘add to cart’ button! They are exactly what I’ve had in mind and add just the touch I was looking for. They also make the chore of making the bed so much more fun!
Summer Style. I love summer for many obvious reasons, but one of the most exciting things for me is being able to get dressed everyday without a pesky faculty dress code to adhere to. It can get quite hot & humid down here in Texas, so you’ll very rarely see me in anything other than short shorts & simple sundresses. My goal is to wear as little clothing as possible without looking like I’m wearing as little clothing as possible.
And by the way, it’s hard to tell, but the outfit on the left is actually a pair of pleather high-waisted shorts. So cute in person, but didn’t photograph as well. And both bags in the left & middle can be found at ashardrichley.com. For the next two days, you can get 50% off any item when you enter the code “summer” at checkout. And no, I don’t get anything for giving you that discount code. The designer is a friend, and I’m happy to give her free advertising when I can:)
Another young life taken too soon. It always saddens me to hear of someone’s passing but even more so when it is someone so young & at the hands of, what will most likely be, drugs. I haven’t watched Glee recently, but I did for the first couple seasons. I loved Finn’s happy, go-lucky character, and in turn, warmed to Cory Monteith as the actor who played him. He was easy to like with his boyish good looks and uncoordinated dance skills. It is incredibly sad to hear of his passing. My prayers are with his loved ones, and i hope they will be able to heal and find some sense of peace without the prying eyes of the media.
Summer Continued. The past few days have been spent in Dallas with some of favorite people. Mama’s birthday is on the 3rd, so baby sister, her boyfriend and I all came in town to celebrate with her.
We started the day with homemade Eggs Benedict (mama’s fave) courtesy of me (baby sister was my sous chef). Then we headed downtown to Clyde Warren Park. We found a table in the shade and enjoyed ice cream and sliders from the local food trucks. After finishing off our midday treats, we took a walk around downtown Dallas. We then made our way to The West End & Dealy Plaza. The day finished off at Maggiano’s for a delicious birthday dinner. It was a wonderful day, and I think we succeeded in making mama feel special.
If that wasn’t enough, my Aunt planned a family celebration for her a couple days later. We all gathered together at my Aunt & Uncles for yummy food, great company, & of course, to celebrate mama. My favorite part was getting to go on “jungle adventures” with my little cousin. We walked in circles around the yard discovering new animals on each excursion. The imagination of children is the most incredible and infectious thing there is. Being around her and her little brother is one of my very favorite things. I’m glad mama had a birthday, so we all had an excuse to get together.
Not that we need one because the very next day we all found ourselves together again. Hanging by the pool (I debuted my high-waisted swim suit), grilling out, and enjoying each others company. Is there anything better than spending time with the ones you love? I can’t think of anything better, and I can say, without a doubt, that this visit has been just what I needed.
Ashard Richley. Last Tuesday evening, I had the pleasure of attending a little get together for an old friend, her fashion line, and her newest addition. Mama & I made our way to a little wine and chocolate bar in Uptown Dallas for a night of fun, fashion, and more importantly… babies!
Ashley, the founder & designer of Ashard Richley, is the younger sister of one of my childhood friends. In fact, her sister is the first person I remember meeting on my first day at our elementary school when I moved there in third grade, and we’ve been friends ever since. For a long time, Ashley was just my friend’s cute, curely-haired little sister, but as we’ve gotten older she’s become my friend as well.
In 2009 Ashley and her then hubby-to-be, Richard, founded Ashard Richley. It started as a handbag line and has since expanded into the realm of clothing. All of her designs are made right in Dallas, TX and are designed with the idea of fashion, form, and function. She has been featured in D Magazine as one of Dallas’ 10 Most Beautiful Women and was also a contestant & WINNER on an episode of 24 Hour Catwalk on Lifetime. And now she’s also a mama!!!
It’s been incredible to watch Ashley’s journey, and I look forward to supporting her as she continues to expand her company. I know that she has what it takes to make it big and someday I’ll be saying, “I knew her when…”. It was wonderful to see Ashley and meet her little man, and of course, mama and I walked away with a few goodies for ourselves, as well!! How could we not?
I would highly recommend that y’all pop on over to AshardRichley.com and check out her designs!
